Reasons and solutions for the malfunction of the conveyor changing direction roller

    2025-05-15

The turning drum, also known as the guiding drum, is an important component of conveyor equipment. Its main function is to change the running direction of the conveyor belt or to clamp the conveyor belt, increasing the edge wrapping between it and the drum. The application range of the turning drum is very wide, covering various industrial fields such as port logistics, mining, metallurgy, cement and building materials, coal mines, chemical production, etc., This is the driving and steering equipment for various belt conveyors. The steering drum has the following characteristics: simple structure, reliable performance, safety and reliability, convenience, etc., And it can operate normally in harsh environments, such as humid environments under coal mines. Turn towards belt conveyor. The structure of the steering drum is relatively simple, generally composed of a main shaft, bearing seat, spoke plate, steel cylinder, etc., And cover the surface of the drum with rubber to increase frictional resistance. At the same time, the bearing seat is equipped with self-aligning roller bearings inside, which not only further ensures the stability of the support, but also ensures the flexibility of the drum rotation. Usually, the transportation mode of conveyors is mainly horizontal transportation or transportation with a certain inclination angle. However, due to the influence of some production environments and production methods, the angle of the conveyor needs to be changed during the transmission process, and the main function of the turning drum is to change the drum. During the process of changing the angle of view of the conveyor belt, the position of the turning drum is very important and requires reasonable calculation to determine when turning transportation at angles of 90 °, 90 °, and below 45 °.

    1. Analyze the cause of the malfunction

During the production process of the conveyor, the drum is affected by an unstable load during operation, which causes the load borne by the drum to change with the amount of conveying, resulting in the drum changing over time. If the drum is subjected to alternating stress for a long time

If the operation is affected, there is a risk of sudden breakage. Usually, brittle fracture occurs without significant plastic deformation, which is known as fatigue failure. The position of the drum welding joint belongs to the stress concentration location. In addition, there are welding defects in the welded joints of the cylinder skin. After several stress changes, small cracks will appear, forming fatigue sources. As the number of stress cycles increases, even small cracks will expand, especially when the materials on both sides of the crack grind together and close in a timed manner, resulting in smooth cross-sectional areas. Under the influence of crack expansion, the area of the welded joint decreases, leading to sudden occurrence of welding defects.

    2. Solution measures

During normal operation, due to the action of alternating stress, the steering drum is repeatedly stretched and compressed, resulting in plastic deformation, and the welded joint of the drum will fracture under the dual effects of cold hardening and excessive stress concentration. In order to fundamentally prevent such accidents from occurring, it is necessary to avoid cracking of the welds on the drum. Therefore, welding measures can be taken.
